(Offered Previously: 2007)
Course No.: 7119 (Consent Required)

This course is a graduate seminar on the social psychology of stigma. The readings will focus on classic and current theories and research on stigma. The emphasis of the course will be on the experience of members of stigmatized groups, although we will (briefly) consider why people stigmatize others. Topics will include a discussion of broad issues related to stigma such as the effect of stigma on social interaction and on self-esteem, as well as issues specific to different groups (e.g. African-Americans, people who have a history of mental illness, people who are overweight, people living with HIV/AIDS).
